How to choose birthday flowers they'll actually love
Start with the person, not the flower. Think about what they wear, how their living room looks, the colour of the mug they always reach for. Someone who lives in black and cream will probably love white roses more than a rainbow mix. Someone with a yellow kitchen wants sunflowers.
A few shortcuts we use at the bench:
- Big personality: red roses, hot pink, anything you can spot from the doorway.
- Soft and romantic: blush roses, lilies, or peonies when they're in season.
- Cheerful, no fuss: sunflowers or a mixed bunch of tulips.
- Not sure at all: a mixed bouquet in their favourite colour. Colour is the safest bet when you don't know their flowers.
Pictured here, Caramel Sun is ten sunflowers sitting in a cloud of baby's breath, with a caramel-brown collar folded around cream wrap. It reads warm rather than loud, which makes it an easy pick for a coworker, a dad, or the friend who claims not to like "girly" flowers.

Birthday flowers by month: what is their birth flower?
Most months have a traditional birth flower, and plenty have two. The list most often quoted in Canada and the US comes from old flower lore, so it isn't a rule, just a lovely place to start. All twelve months are in the guide further down this page.
A birth flower makes a bouquet feel personal before the card is even opened. Some of them, like roses for June, carnations for January and chrysanthemums for November, are easy to find at most times of year. Others are fussy. Lily of the valley, sweet pea and cosmos have short seasons, and a few (holly, hawthorn, morning glory) belong in a garden more than a vase.
So read the list as meaning and inspiration, not a menu. If you'd like a birth flower worked into an order, call us at (437) 291-5605 and we'll tell you honestly whether it's likely around their birthday. Sometimes it is. When it isn't, colour can carry the idea instead: violet and purple tones for a February birthday, gold and rust for October.
Same-day birthday flower delivery
It happens. The birthday was in your calendar and it still snuck up on you. Order by 1 pm and we can deliver the same day to most postal codes, from Newmarket and Aurora down through Markham, Vaughan and into Toronto.
A few things help a same-day birthday delivery go smoothly:
- Send it where they'll be. If they're at work all day, an office address beats an empty porch. Include the company name and the suite or floor.
- Pick a window. Morning gets flowers there before lunch, afternoon suits someone who's home later, and anytime works if the day is open.
- Keep the card short. You type it at checkout and it's tucked in with the flowers. "Happy birthday, I'm so glad you were born" has never let anyone down.
If you know the date is coming, choose it at checkout now and stop thinking about it. Every design here can go out same day, and the same-day delivery collection is a quick place to start. For more rescue ideas, see our last-minute birthday flower tips.
Milestone birthdays and personalised bouquets
For a 30th, a 50th or an 80th, size and a personal touch do a lot of the talking. Several birthday designs can carry an initial or a banner, and you'll see them tagged Personalise in the shop.
Pictured, Pearl Signature is twenty-five blush pink roses with a letter made of white pearls resting on top and a dusty rose ribbon sweeping across. It's a quiet kind of personal, lovely for a mother, a sister or a best friend. Others go bigger: Wreathed in Pink and Lily Dedication both come with a banner, and Cashmere Rose sets an initial on one hundred white roses.
Matching the number of roses to the age works nicely for the early milestones. Twenty-five roses for a 25th looks generous. For an 80th, a full mixed bouquet in her favourite colours usually says it better than a count. When the occasion calls for something really large, have a look at our luxury bouquets.

Birth month flowers, January to December
These are the traditional birth flowers most often cited in Canada and the US. Lists vary a little, and not every flower is in season (or in our cooler) around every birthday, so treat them as meaning and inspiration.
- 01
January: carnation and snowdrop
Carnations traditionally stand for love and admiration, and they last well in a vase. Snowdrops, the first white bells of late winter, are linked with hope.
- 02
February: violet and primrose
Violets are tied to loyalty and modesty, primroses to young love. Both are small garden flowers, so a purple-toned bouquet is the easier way to nod to them.
- 03
March: daffodil and jonquil
Bright yellow, early spring and a long-standing sign of new beginnings. Daffodils prefer a vase of their own, since their sap can shorten the life of other stems.
- 04
April: daisy and sweet pea
Daisies mean innocence and cheer. Sweet peas are traditionally a thank you for a lovely time, famously fragrant and famously short-lived.
- 05
May: lily of the valley and hawthorn
Lily of the valley is said to mean sweetness and a return of happiness. It is tiny, fragrant and toxic if eaten, so keep it away from pets and small children.
- 06
June: rose and honeysuckle
The rose covers nearly every kind of love depending on its colour, and honeysuckle stands for devoted affection. June birthdays are the easiest of the year to buy for.
- 07
July: larkspur and water lily
Larkspur grows in tall spikes, often blue or purple, and is linked with an open heart. The water lily traditionally stands for peace and purity.
- 08
August: gladiolus and poppy
Gladiolus takes its name from the Latin for sword and traditionally means strength of character. The poppy is tied to imagination, and in Canada to remembrance too.
- 09
September: aster and morning glory
Star-shaped asters are often said to mean love and patience. Morning glory, which opens with the sun, is linked with affection.
- 10
October: marigold and cosmos
Marigolds bring warm orange and gold, and cosmos are often linked with order and peace. Both suit an autumn palette of rust, gold and cream.
- 11
November: chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums traditionally stand for joy, friendship and a long life, and they last a long time once cut. Bronze or plum tones suit a late autumn birthday.
- 12
December: narcissus and holly
Paperwhite narcissus is linked with hope and good wishes, holly with protection and good cheer. Neither is a usual bouquet flower, so red and white with winter greenery is the classic way to suggest them.

Questions people ask
Something else? Call (437) 291-5605 or send us a message.
What are the birth month flowers?
Traditionally: carnation (January), violet (February), daffodil (March), daisy (April), lily of the valley (May), rose (June), larkspur (July), gladiolus (August), aster (September), marigold (October), chrysanthemum (November) and narcissus (December). Many months also have a second flower, and lists vary slightly by source.
Can I get birthday flowers delivered today?
Yes, in most cases. Order by 1 pm and we can deliver the same day to most postal codes in York Region and Toronto. Choose a morning, afternoon or anytime window at checkout. You can also schedule a future date if you're planning ahead.
How much is birthday flower delivery?
Delivery fees are based on driving distance from our studio in Oak Ridges, Richmond Hill, starting at $12. You'll see the exact fee at checkout before you pay.
Can I add a birthday message to the flowers?
Yes. Type your message at checkout and it goes on a card tucked in with the flowers. Prices are never included with a delivery, so the recipient only sees the flowers and your note.
What birthday flowers are good for a man?
Sunflowers are a reliable choice: bold, warm and not fussy. Deep red roses, white roses with plenty of greenery, or a bouquet in his favourite colour also work well. Skip anything too frilly unless you know he likes it.
What if a flower in the bouquet isn't available on the day?
Flowers are seasonal. If a stem isn't at its best that day, we swap it for one of equal or higher value in the same colours, keeping the look and size of the design you chose.
