Two sunflower bouquets, and how to choose

We keep the sunflower collection small and simple. Both bouquets pair sunflowers with baby's breath, so the choice comes down to size and wrap.

Caramel Sun is ten sunflowers sitting low and open in a cloud of baby's breath, wrapped in cream paper with a layered caramel-brown collar and tied with a cream ribbon. The warm wrap picks up the gold in the petals, so it reads soft rather than loud. Good for a kitchen table, a desk, or someone who likes warm, earthy colours.

Meadow Light is fifteen sunflowers scattered through a deep, frothy bed of baby's breath, wrapped in soft nude paper with the edges rolled outward. The yellow faces pop out of the white like a field in bloom. It's the more generous of the two, the one to pick when you want a reaction at the door.

If you were hoping for a sunflower and rose bouquet, we don't have one in the shop at the moment. You're welcome to call (437) 291-5605 and ask, or have a look through our rose bouquets for something in the same spirit.

What sunflowers mean, and when to send them

Sunflowers are hard to misread. They're associated with happiness, warmth, loyalty and friendship, and the old story that they follow the sun gives them a reputation for devotion too. The truth is a little more charming: young sunflower plants track the sun across the sky during the day, and the heads settle facing east once they mature.

They don't carry the romantic weight of red roses, which is exactly why they work in so many situations:

  • A birthday, especially for someone who isn't a pink-roses person. Our birthday flowers have more ideas.
  • Get well wishes that brighten a room without feeling heavy.
  • A thank you for a neighbour, a teacher or a colleague.
  • A new job, a new home or moving day, when someone could use a bit of sun.
  • Friendship, plain and simple.

Plenty of people who'd never pick roses for themselves love sunflowers. That makes them a good bet for a dad, a brother, or the friend who insists they don't really like flowers.

Sunflower season in Ontario

In Ontario, sunflowers bloom in the fields from mid-summer into early fall, roughly July through September, and that's when a sunflower bouquet feels most at home. Cut sunflowers are grown commercially for much of the year, though, so they're often around outside that window too. Caramel Sun, with its caramel-brown collar, feels especially right once September comes in.

As with all our flowers, what arrives depends on what's fresh. If a stem isn't at its best on your delivery day, we replace it with one of equal or higher value in the same colours, keeping the look and size of the bouquet.

Order by 1 pm and we can deliver the same day to most postal codes, from Newmarket and Aurora down through Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan and into Toronto. You can also schedule a date ahead at checkout, which is handy for a birthday you already know is coming. Our delivery page explains windows and fees.

How to keep sunflowers looking bright

  1. 01

    Recut on arrival

Trim 2 to 3 cm off each stem on an angle before they go into water.

  2. 02

    Deep water

Sunflowers have thick, thirsty stems. Fill the vase high and check the level every day.

  3. 03

    Strip the leaves

Sunflower leaves wilt well before the flowers do. Remove any below the waterline and most of the rest.

  4. 04

    A sturdy vase

The heads are heavy. Use a vase with some weight and height so the bouquet can't tip it over.

  5. 05

    Fresh water often

Sunflower stems can cloud the water quickly. Change it every day or two and rinse the vase when you do.

  6. 06

    Light, not heat

They like a bright room, but keep them away from radiators, hot windowsills and the fruit bowl.

Questions people ask

Something else? Call (437) 291-5605 or send us a message.

How long do sunflowers last in a vase?

Often a week or more with good care. Keep the water deep and fresh, recut the stems every couple of days and strip any leaves that sit in the water. A cool room helps; warm, dry air shortens their vase life.

Can I get sunflowers delivered the same day?

Yes, to most postal codes in York Region and Toronto when you order by 1 pm. You can choose anytime, morning or afternoon delivery, or schedule a future date at checkout.

What do sunflowers symbolise?

Sunflowers are usually linked with happiness, warmth, loyalty and friendship. Because young plants turn to follow the sun, they're also associated with devotion. They're a cheerful, low-pressure gift, which is why people send them for birthdays, thank yous and get well wishes.

Do you make a sunflower and rose bouquet?

Our sunflower bouquets pair sunflowers with baby's breath, and we don't have a sunflower and rose design in the shop right now. If you'd like to ask about one, call (437) 291-5605 during opening hours.

Why are my sunflowers drooping?

Usually it's thirst. Sunflowers drink a lot, and their heavy heads droop quickly when the water runs low. Recut the stems, strip extra leaves and put them in deep, cool water. If the neck has bent, wrapping the stems upright in paper while they drink can help them straighten.

Are sunflowers safe around pets?

Sunflowers are generally listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs, which makes them a friendlier choice than lilies for a home with pets. The baby's breath in these bouquets can cause a mild upset stomach if it's chewed, so keep the vase out of reach.
