Shop all flowersWho to thank with flowers
Flowers make a good thank you when the favour was bigger than a coffee but a cheque would be strange. A few people who often deserve them:
- A host, after a weekend away or a big family dinner. Send them the next day, so they arrive once the dishes are done rather than mid-cooking.
- A teacher, coach or tutor, at the end of the school year or the season.
- A neighbour who fed the cat, took in your parcels or cleared your driveway all February.
- A colleague or client after a big project. Pick something easy to keep on a desk or a reception counter.
- Nurses and care staff. Many units cannot accept fresh flowers, so ask first, or thank them with a card and send the flowers to someone at home instead.
- The friends who carried you through a move, an illness or a loss.
Whoever it is, the card is the part they keep. The flowers make sure it gets read, and propped up somewhere it will be seen for a week.
Choosing flowers to say thank you
There is no official thank you flower, so choose for the person rather than the symbol. A few rules of thumb help.
Colour first. Yellow, orange and sunflower gold feel warm and grateful without any hint of romance. Pink and peach are gentle, which suits a teacher or an older relative. Go easy on red roses for a colleague or a friend's partner: to most people, red reads as love.
Then size. A modest hand-tied bouquet is right for most thank yous. Going very large for a small favour can leave the other person feeling they owe you. Save the big gesture for the friend who spent a month helping with a newborn, or the whole wedding party.
Think about where it will live. For an office or a busy household, a vase arrangement arrives ready to set down. For someone who enjoys arranging, a wrapped bouquet gives them that small pleasure.
If you like a little meaning, pink roses, hydrangeas and sweet peas are traditionally linked with gratitude. Our guide to choosing flowers by symbolism goes further.
Thank you notes for funeral flowers
After a funeral, families are often left with a stack of cards and a long list of people who sent flowers. Writing back can feel like one more job at a hard time. A few things make it easier:
- There is no deadline. Within a few weeks is common, but a note sent two months later is still received kindly.
- Keep it short. "Thank you for the white roses you sent for Dad's service. They meant a great deal to all of us." That is plenty.
- Be specific if you can. "Mum would have loved the lilies" says more than any formal line.
- Share the job. Siblings or close friends can write some notes on the family's behalf.
- Keep the florist cards from the service. They record who sent what, which is very hard to remember afterwards.
Some families answer kindness with flowers of their own: a small bouquet for the friend who organised the reception, or for the neighbours who brought food all week. Nobody expects it, which is exactly why it lands so well. If you are still sending condolences yourself, our sympathy flowers are designed with the family home in mind.

What flowers say thank you?
There is no single thank you flower. Traditionally, pink roses, hydrangeas and sweet peas are linked with gratitude, while sunflowers and yellow flowers feel warm and friendly. Most people care more about colours they love than about symbolism, so choose with the person in mind.
What should I write on a thank you card with flowers?
Name what you are grateful for and how it helped. "Thank you for driving me to every appointment, it made the hard weeks easier" beats a generic line. One or two sentences is plenty. You type the message at checkout and we tuck the card in with the flowers.
How do you thank someone for sending you flowers?
A short note, text or call within a week or two is enough. Mention the flowers and how you are enjoying them, for example "The tulips are on my desk and they've made my week." After a funeral there is no rush, and families often send notes over several weeks.
Is it appropriate to send thank you flowers to a colleague or client?
Yes, as long as the gesture fits the relationship. Keep the colours friendly rather than romantic, so go easy on red roses, and choose something that is easy to keep on a desk. It is worth checking that neither workplace has a gift policy that rules it out.
When should you send thank you flowers?
While the favour is still fresh. Within a week is ideal after a dinner or a weekend stay. For teachers, the last week of school works well. After a wedding or a big event, a few days later is perfect, once things have calmed down and the flowers can be properly enjoyed.
Can I send thank you flowers the same day?
Yes. Order by 1 pm for same-day delivery to most postal codes across Toronto and York Region, including Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan. You can also choose a future date at checkout, handy if you want them to arrive after a party or on the last day of term.
