How many roses should be in a red roses bouquet?

There's no wrong number, but each size reads differently when it arrives.

  • 12 roses: the classic dozen. Neat, confident, and enough for a first anniversary or a "just because".
  • 25 roses: a full, round bouquet that looks generous on a kitchen table. This is where most romantic gifts land.
  • 50 roses: the size that makes people at the office stop and ask who it's from.
  • 100 roses or more: a showpiece, heavy enough to need two arms. Save it for a proposal, a milestone, or an apology that really needs to work.

Heart and Wing, pictured, is the easiest way to choose: the same design in 25, 50, 75 or 100 red roses, with a gold butterfly on top and small gold hearts scattered between the blooms. Pick the size, keep the look.

One practical note. Bigger isn't always kinder. A hundred roses in a one-bedroom condo can take over the place, and they'll need a very large vase or a bucket. If she lives small, 25 or 50 well-made roses will go down better than a giant bouquet she has nowhere to put. Our rose collection has every size and colour in one place.

Flowers for your girlfriend or wife

Early on, flowers say "I'm thinking about you." Ten years in, they say "I still notice you." Both are worth saying, but they call for slightly different bouquets.

For a newer relationship, keep it light and pretty. Pink roses, white roses with a blush centre, or a smaller red bouquet feel romantic without being overwhelming. Fifty red roses on the third date is a lot of pressure for everyone.

For a wife or long-term partner, you have an advantage: you know her taste. Use it. Does she wear gold or silver? Does she love peonies and complain every year that their season is too short? Is she the one who thinks red roses are a cliché? Then don't send red roses.

Make it about her. A few designs carry an initial, like Meringue, Ivory Script and Initial in Bloom, and they're tagged Personalise in the shop. A letter on top of fifty roses is a small detail that makes it unmistakably hers.

And the card matters more than the size. Type a line at checkout that only the two of you would understand. The flowers get noticed. The card gets kept. If you want help choosing, read our guide to picking a romantic bouquet.

Romantic flowers beyond red roses

Roses get the attention, but they aren't the only flowers that say love.

Peonies are the big, ruffled, slightly extravagant option, and many people love them more than roses. Peony Parcel, pictured, is ten peonies in pink and creamy white, some open and some still round buds, set among soft pink hydrangea with a pink satin ribbon looped across the top like a parcel tie. Peonies open quickly in a warm room, which is half the fun.

Lilies bring height and scent. Designs like Lily Garland and Starry Blush pair roses with lilies for a softer, more romantic shape. One caution: lilies are highly toxic to cats, so skip them if there's a cat at home.

White roses are underrated as a romantic flower. They feel calm, a little formal, and very grown-up. Full Moon and Cashmere Rose are both built around them.

If you're curious what each flower traditionally means, our list of romantic flowers that express your love goes deeper.

What rose colours mean

Rose meanings come from old flower language and vary a little depending on who you ask, but these are the ones most people recognise.

  1. 01

    Red

Romantic love and desire. The most direct thing you can say with a flower.

  2. 02

    Pink

Admiration, affection and gentleness. Pale pink feels sweet and new; deeper pink says thank you or I admire you.

  3. 03

    White

New beginnings, respect and devotion. Often chosen for weddings, and lovely for a long marriage.

  4. 04

    Lavender

Fascination, and traditionally love at first sight. A good choice for someone who isn't a red-roses person.

  5. 05

    Yellow

Friendship and joy. Wonderful for a friend, though in romance it can read as platonic, so mix it with other colours if you mean more.

  6. 06

    Peach and coral

Warmth, enthusiasm and desire with a softer edge than red. Nice for a newer relationship.

  7. 07

    Red and white together

Often read as unity, two people becoming one. A popular mix for engagements and anniversaries.

  8. 08

    Red and pink together

Love with a playful streak. It looks warm and generous, and less formal than all red.

What do red roses mean?

Red roses are the traditional symbol of romantic love and desire. They're the classic choice for Valentine's Day, anniversaries and proposals. A single red rose is often said to mean love at first sight, and a dozen is the familiar way of saying I love you.

What flowers should I send my girlfriend?

Start with her favourite colour or flower if you know it. If you don't, pink roses, a red rose bouquet of 12 to 25 stems, or a pink and white mix are safe and romantic. Add a personal line on the card so it feels like it's from you.

Can I add an initial or name to a romantic bouquet?

Some designs can be personalised and are tagged Personalise in the shop. In this collection, Meringue, Ivory Script, Initial in Bloom and Ballet Bow carry an initial, and Wreathed in Pink and Lily Dedication come with a banner.

Can you deliver a red roses bouquet today?

Usually, yes. Order by 1 pm and we can deliver the same day to most postal codes across York Region and Toronto. Choose a morning, afternoon or anytime window at checkout.

How do I keep a rose bouquet fresh longer?

Recut the stems at an angle, about two centimetres up, and put them in a clean vase with fresh water. Change the water every couple of days. Keep the roses away from heaters, direct sun and fruit bowls, since ripening fruit makes flowers age faster.

Will the recipient see how much I paid?

No. Prices are never included with a delivery. The recipient gets the flowers and the card with your message, which you type at checkout. All they need to know is who sent them and what you wanted to say.
