When is peony season in Toronto?

Peonies are the flower people wait all year for. In southern Ontario they traditionally bloom from late May through June, and that's when they're most plentiful and at their fullest. Then, almost overnight, the local season is done.

Outside those weeks, peonies are often still available from growers elsewhere, including the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons run the other way. Supply is thinner and changes week to week, so a peony bouquet in November depends on what comes in.

Here's how that plays out when you order. If peonies (or any stem) aren't at their best on your delivery day, we replace them with flowers of equal or higher value in the same colours, keeping the look and size of the design. If it has to be peonies, say for a friend who has loved them since childhood, call us on (437) 291-5605 before you order and we'll tell you what's in.

Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, lands a little ahead of the local season, so it's worth ordering early for that one.

How to open closed peony buds

Tight, round buds are not a mistake. Peonies travel better closed, and watching them open is half the pleasure. Claret and Cream, for example, sets ruffled deep red and creamy white peonies beside a few round buds still closed, so it looks different every morning.

To help the buds along:

  • Recut the stems by 2 to 3 cm and stand them in lukewarm water rather than cold.
  • Keep the vase somewhere warm and bright but out of direct sun. Warmth speeds opening; a cool room slows it down, which is useful if you want them at their peak for the weekend.
  • If a bud feels sticky, wipe it gently with a damp cloth. The sugary coating on some buds can hold the petals shut.
  • Give a bud a gentle squeeze. If it feels soft, like a marshmallow, it will open, usually within a few days. If it's still hard as a marble after several days, it may never open.

Once they open, peonies move quickly, going from cupped to wide and blowsy in a day or two. When the petals finally drop, they tend to go all at once. That's simply how peonies finish.

Choosing a bouquet of peonies by size

The smallest way in is Garden Duet: five soft pink peonies with ten white tulips whose frilled petals are streaked with green, wrapped in pink paper. A nice size for a desk or a kitchen table.

Peony Nest is the one to look at if you want to choose the scale. It sets peonies into soft white hydrangea in four sizes, 10, 25, 40 or 50 peonies, in whatever colours are freshest. The photos show deep red peonies in white paper, and blush and white in a peach wrap.

In between:

  • Rose Quartz and Peony Parcel each have 10 peonies with hydrangea (plus lavender-pink spray roses in Rose Quartz).
  • Claret and Cream is all peonies, deep claret with creamy white.
  • Sunlit Peonies has 15 pink peonies with creamy hydrangea and alstroemeria.
  • Peony Season brings 20 pink peonies with mixed roses and a little hydrangea.
  • Sugared Peonies is the big gesture: 50 pink peonies scattered with pink baby's breath.

For a first date, keep it small. For a milestone birthday in June, nobody has ever complained about fifty. If you like the peony and hydrangea pairing, our hydrangea bouquets show more of it.

What peonies mean, and who to send them to

In Chinese tradition the peony is a flower of prosperity, honour and good fortune, and it's often linked with romance and a happy marriage. Western anniversary lists often name it as the flower for the 12th year. Colour meanings vary, but pink is usually read as romance and affection, white as something quieter and gentler, and deep red as passion and respect.

Mostly, though, people send peonies because the person loves peonies. It's one of the few flowers people name out loud as their favourite. If someone mentioned it once, they'll notice that you remembered.

Good moments for a peony bouquet:

  • A June birthday or anniversary, right in the local season. Our anniversary flowers have more ideas.
  • A new mother. Soft pink peonies and a new baby card go together well.
  • A thank you for someone with a garden who already grows them and will appreciate a bunch they didn't have to cut.

Curious what else is at its best through the year? Our seasonal flower guide walks through it month by month.

Peony care, from bud to finish

Peonies reward a little attention in the first day and not much after that.

  1. 01

    On arrival

Unwrap, recut 2 to 3 cm off each stem on an angle and put them straight into clean, lukewarm water with flower food.

  2. 02

    Strip the leaves

Take off any leaves below the waterline. Peony foliage breaks down quickly in water and clouds it.

  3. 03

    Keep the water up

Peonies drink a lot. Top up daily and change the water every couple of days, recutting each time.

  4. 04

    Speed up or slow down

A warm room opens buds faster, a cool room holds them back. Moving the vase somewhere cool overnight can stretch the week.

  5. 05

    Support heavy heads

Fully open heads get heavy. A taller vase, or cutting the stems a little shorter, stops them flopping over the rim.

  6. 06

    Mind the heat

Keep them away from radiators, direct sun and the fruit bowl, all of which shorten vase life.

  7. 07

    The finish

When the petals start falling in a heap, that's the end. They look lovely scattered across a table for one more day.

Questions people ask

When are peonies in season in Ontario?

Locally, peonies traditionally bloom from late May through June. Outside that window, peonies from growers elsewhere, including the Southern Hemisphere, often fill parts of the year, though supply varies. If peonies aren't at their best on your delivery day, we use flowers of equal or higher value in the same colours.

Why won't my peonies open?

Most buds just need time, warmth and water. Recut the stems, use lukewarm water and keep the vase in a warm spot out of direct sun. Wipe any sticky coating off the buds with a damp cloth. Soft buds usually open within a few days; buds that stay hard as a marble may not open.

How long do peonies last in a vase?

Usually around five to seven days once they start opening, depending on how warm the room is. A bouquet that arrives with closed buds gives you the opening days on top of that. Fresh water, regular recutting and a spot out of the sun make the biggest difference.

Can I get peonies delivered today in Toronto?

Order by 1 pm for same-day delivery to most postal codes in Toronto and York Region. Because peonies are seasonal, on some days a flower of equal or higher value in the same colours may stand in. If it must be peonies, call (437) 291-5605 first and we'll tell you what's in.

What goes well with peonies in a bouquet?

Hydrangea is the classic partner: it fills the space with soft volume while the peony buds open. Roses, spray roses and tulips work well too. Most of our peony designs include hydrangea, and Garden Duet pairs five pink peonies with ten white tulips.

Do peonies have a scent?

Many do, often a soft, sweet scent, but it varies a lot from one variety to the next and some barely smell at all. The scent is usually strongest once the flowers are fully open in a warm room.
