What hydrangea brings to a bouquet
One hydrangea stem is really a crowd of small florets on a single head, which is why it fills a bouquet like nothing else. Florists use it as the soft, cloudy layer that holds bigger flowers up and makes a bouquet look generous from every side.
Colour is part of the appeal. In the garden, bigleaf hydrangeas famously shift with the soil: more acidic soil tends to give blue flowers, more alkaline soil tends to give pink. As cut flowers they come in blue, white, cream, pink, green and purple tones, and they sit happily next to almost anything.
Blue Lullaby is our cool-toned bouquet. Soft blue hydrangea sits low, pale roses with an icy tint rise above it, and purple pincushion scabiosa pokes out on longer stems, all wrapped in white paper with a pale blue ribbon. It's calm rather than loud, which makes it a good choice for a get well note, or for someone who would always rather have blue than pink.

Peony and hydrangea bouquets
Peonies and hydrangeas are a natural pair. Peonies give you the big, ruffled flowers; hydrangea fills the space around them while the buds open, so the bouquet looks full on the first day and still looks full on the fifth.
Most of our hydrangea designs are built this way:
- Rose Quartz: 10 blush and cream peonies with lavender-pink spray roses and pale green-white hydrangea.
- Peony Parcel: 10 pink and white peonies set among soft pink hydrangea, tied across the top with pink satin ribbon.
- Sunlit Peonies: 15 pink peonies in creamy white hydrangea, with alstroemeria adding flecks of pink.
- Peony Season: 20 pink peonies with mixed roses and a little hydrangea.
- Peony Nest: peonies in soft white hydrangea, in sizes from 10 to 50 peonies.
For something without peonies, Garden Gate Basket fills a wooden slatted basket with pink and white hydrangea, lilac daisies, alstroemeria and snapdragons.
Peonies are seasonal, so if a stem isn't at its best on the day, we replace it with one of equal or higher value in the same colours, keeping the look and size. The peonies collection has more on peony season and how to open the buds.

Why hydrangeas wilt, and how to revive one
Hydrangeas have a reputation for wilting dramatically, and they've earned it. They're very thirsty, their woody stems can seal up with sap, and their big heads lose moisture fast in warm, dry air. A hydrangea that looks perfect at breakfast can be hanging its head by dinner.
The good news: they usually come back. Hydrangeas can take up water through their heads as well as their stems, which is where the well-known florist rescue comes from.
- Recut the stem on a sharp angle, 2 to 3 cm up.
- Fill a sink or a large bowl with cool water and submerge the whole head, face down, for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Lift it out, shake off the excess, recut once more and put the stem straight into fresh, cool water.
Often the head is firm again within an hour or two. Some people also make a short slit up the bottom of the stem to help the woody end drink. After that, keep the vase full, mist the heads on warm days and keep them out of direct sun. For the bigger picture, see why flowers wilt quickly.
Hydrangeas in wedding flowers
Search for a hydrangea bouquet and a good share of what comes up is bridal. It makes sense. A single hydrangea head covers a lot of space, it comes in soft colours that photograph well, and it pairs easily with roses and peonies. Blue hydrangea is also a popular way to carry something blue.
They do need thought on a wedding day, since hydrangeas wilt quickly out of water on a warm afternoon, and that's something to plan around with whoever does your flowers.
If you're planning a wedding, our weddings page is the place to start that conversation. If you want a hydrangea bouquet as a gift, say for the couple, a parent after the big day or a friend who just got engaged, every design on this page delivers across York Region and Toronto, from Newmarket and Aurora down through Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill.
Hydrangea care at a glance
- 01
Water first
Get the stems into cool water as soon as the bouquet arrives. Hydrangeas wilt fast without it.
- 02
Fill it high
Use a vase with plenty of water and top it up every day. They drink more than most flowers.
- 03
Recut often
Every couple of days, recut the stems on an angle so the woody ends keep drinking.
- 04
Mist the heads
A light spritz of water on the heads helps on warm days, since they lose moisture through their florets.
- 05
Keep it cool
Out of direct sun, away from radiators and heat vents. Warm, dry air is the quickest way to a droopy head.
- 06
Dry them afterwards
When a head starts to feel papery, let the water run down and leave it in the vase. Many hydrangeas dry nicely and keep their shape for months.

How do you revive a wilted hydrangea?
Recut the stem, then submerge the whole head in a sink of cool water for 30 to 60 minutes. Hydrangeas can take in water through their heads. Shake off the excess, recut again and put it straight back into fresh, cool water. Most heads firm up within an hour or two.
How long do hydrangeas last in a vase?
Often five to seven days, sometimes longer with fresh water, regular recutting and a cool room. In a hot room they can wilt on the first day, but they usually revive with a good soak and a fresh cut.
Why do my hydrangeas keep wilting?
Usually the stem has stopped drinking. Hydrangea stems are woody and can seal over with sap, and the large heads lose water quickly in warm, dry air. Recut the stem, soak the head, keep the vase full and move it out of the sun.
Why are some hydrangeas blue and others pink?
In the garden, bigleaf hydrangeas change colour with the soil. Acidic soil, where the plant can take up aluminium, tends to give blue flowers, while alkaline soil tends to give pink. White hydrangeas generally stay white whatever the soil. Cut hydrangeas keep the colour they had when they were cut.
Do you have a blue hydrangea bouquet?
Yes. Blue Lullaby pairs soft blue hydrangea with pale, icy-toned roses and purple scabiosa, wrapped in white with a pale blue ribbon. Our other hydrangea designs lean towards white, cream and pink, usually alongside peonies.
