What Do Lilies Symbolize? A Complete Meaning Guide

/7 min read

Bouquet of pink roses, white hydrangea and baby's breath with a white satin handle

What do lilies symbolize? Mostly purity, renewal and devotion, but the honest answer is that it depends on the colour, the variety and, to a surprising degree, the culture you ask. A white lily can sit on a casket one week and in a bridal bouquet the next, and both make sense.

Lilies get used for some of the biggest moments people have, happy and sad, which is probably why they have collected so many meanings. Here is how those meanings break down, where they come from, and how to pick the right lily for what you want to say.

The short answer

At their core, lilies stand for purity, renewal and devotion. That is the meaning most people are reaching for, whether they know it or not: a fresh start, deep respect, or a way of honouring someone.

Once you get into specific colours and types, it branches out quite a bit. Pink leans toward admiration, orange toward confidence, yellow toward gratitude. So it's worth going a little further than the one-line version.

Where the symbolism actually comes from

Lilies have carried meaning for thousands of years. In Greek mythology they were linked to Hera, queen of the gods. The story goes that white lilies sprang from drops of her milk as she nursed the infant Hercules, which goes some way to explaining why the white lily got tied to motherhood and purity so early.

In Christian tradition, the white Madonna lily became closely associated with the Virgin Mary and with Easter, standing for purity and rebirth. That's a big part of why white lilies fill churches and dining tables every spring.

The Victorians, who used flowers as a kind of coded language, gave lilies to say things they didn't want to say out loud: sincerity, majesty and sometimes a quiet declaration of love.

In Chinese, the word for lily, bǎihé, echoes a traditional wedding blessing that wishes a couple a hundred years of happy union. That's why lilies are a common wedding gift in Chinese families. Same flower, completely different weight, depending on where you're standing.

Lily meanings by colour

This is usually the real question. People don't want to know what lilies mean in general; they want to know what the colour in front of them means.

White lilies are the ones most closely tied to purity, virtue and new beginnings. They turn up at weddings, christenings and funerals alike, which can surprise people. What links those occasions is that white lilies stand for a plain, honest kind of feeling, whether that's joy or grief.

Pink lilies, Stargazers especially, usually stand for admiration and abundance. They're a good fit for a "thinking of you" bouquet or a celebration because they feel warm and personal without tipping into romance.

Orange lilies carry a bolder meaning: confidence, passion and pride. We'd point you to orange for a promotion, a graduation or any milestone where the flowers should feel like a party rather than something soft.

Yellow lilies are tied to joy, gratitude and lightness. They're an easy pick for a get-well bouquet or a "hope your week gets better" gift. Yellow is hard to be gloomy around.

Red lilies are less common than red roses for romance, but they do stand for deep love and passion. They're worth considering if you want something romantic that isn't the usual dozen roses.

Purple lilies are often linked with royalty, admiration and quiet respect. You see them less often, which is part of their appeal for someone who likes things a little out of the ordinary.

Lily types and what each one means

Beyond colour, the variety changes the meaning too. Most people choosing between lilies don't realize there's a difference, so here's the short version.

Stargazer lilies, with their deep pink colour and strong scent, are linked to ambition and encouragement. They suit someone reaching for something big: a degree, a new job, a move.

Casablanca lilies are large, pure white oriental lilies, often chosen for weddings and celebrations and associated with prosperity. Their scent is strong, so they're best in a big, airy room.

Calla lilies aren't true lilies at all, but they get grouped with them. They're said to stand for rebirth and great beauty, and in some traditions marriage and fidelity, which is why they became a modern wedding favourite.

Tiger lilies, orange with dark spots, stand for wealth, pride and confidence. They look a little fierce, which suits the meaning.

Asiatic lilies are usually linked to wealth and prosperity. They're often less expensive than orientals and have little or no scent, which some people prefer.

Daylilies are traditionally connected to a mother's devotion, particularly in Chinese culture. Each bloom lasts a single day, which is where the name comes from.

When people actually choose lilies

There's a fairly steady pattern to when people reach for lilies instead of roses or something else.

Sympathy and funeral flowers are probably the most common use, because of the peace and purity white lilies represent. They comfort without looking festive, which matters in a room full of grieving people. Our sympathy flowers collection is a good place to look, and the post on funeral flowers and their meaning goes into more detail.

Weddings come next, especially Casablancas and callas, because the new-beginnings meaning fits the day so neatly. Easter brings a run on white lilies, thanks to their long link with renewal and faith. Mother's Day is another natural fit, given the old Hera story and the daylily's link to mothers. Our Mother's Day flowers are worth a look if that's the occasion, and a pink or white lily bouquet rarely misses.

And plenty of people choose lilies for no symbolic reason at all. They love the scent, and a few open oriental stems can carry a whole arrangement. Sometimes that's reason enough.

A word of caution if you have cats

This isn't about symbolism, but it's the most important part of this page. True lilies, including Stargazer, Asiatic, Easter, tiger and oriental lilies, are highly toxic to cats. A small amount of pollen, a nibbled leaf or a lap of vase water can cause kidney failure.

Calla lilies and peace lilies aren't true lilies, but they can still irritate a cat's mouth and stomach, so they're not a great swap either. If the person getting the flowers has a cat, skip lilies altogether. When you order, mention any pets in the order notes and we'll design around it.

Choosing the right lily arrangement for your moment

If you're stuck, start with what you're trying to say. Comfort and peace: white, almost every time. Celebration and admiration: pink or orange. Gratitude or encouragement: yellow tends to land right.

A few tips for keeping your lilies looking their best

A lily bouquet that sags after two days says the wrong thing, so a little care is worth it.

First, don't worry if most of the lilies arrive closed. Lilies are usually cut in bud and open over several days in a warm room, so a lily bouquet often looks its best on day three or four. Buds that are already showing colour will open; tight green ones at the very top sometimes won't, and that's normal.

Trim the stems at an angle before they go into water, and change the water every couple of days. Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from heating vents; lilies last noticeably longer somewhere cool.

As each bloom opens, pull off the orange anthers with a tissue. The pollen stains clothes, tablecloths and fingers, and it's the part that's most dangerous to cats. Pick off spent flowers as they fade so the buds further down the stem have the energy to open. Our cut flower care guide has the full routine.

One last thought on meaning: the person opening the door will rarely look up what a pink Stargazer stands for. They will know who sent it and why. Pick the colour that fits the moment, write a good card, and the lilies will do the rest. If you're unsure which ones fit, Laris Florist can help over the phone or online.
