Grand openings

Grand opening flowers for new businesses in Toronto and York Region

Grand opening flowers do two jobs: they tell a new business that people are rooting for it, and they make the front door look ready on day one. We make both kinds, the arrangement you send to say congratulations and the pieces owners order for themselves.

What we make

Flowers for grand openings

  • 01

Congratulations flowers for a new business

Sent by friends, family, suppliers or the shop next door. A vase arrangement or a basket is the kind choice here, because nobody on opening day has time to find a vase and trim stems.

  • 02

    Entrance arrangements for opening day

A large, bright arrangement by the door or in the window, so the place looks like something is happening before anyone walks in. Tell us about the space and the light, and we'll suggest a size and colours.

  • 03

    Counter and reception pieces

A smaller arrangement for the till, the host stand or the reception desk, where customers stand close. We keep these compact, easy for staff to look after and out of the way of the card machine.

  • 04

    Centrepieces for the launch event

Hosting a ribbon cutting, a soft launch or an evening for neighbours and clients? We can make table centrepieces and a piece for the food or drinks table, designed and quoted for your date.

  • 05

    Bouquets for the owners

Wrapped bouquets to hand over at the ribbon cutting or at the end of a long first day. Sunflowers are a popular pick for this: big, cheerful and easy to carry home after closing.

What to send for a store opening

Start with the counter, not the flowers. A small boutique or a café has very little free surface on opening day, and a wide arrangement next to the till just gets moved to the floor. A taller, narrower piece, or a basket that can sit on a shelf or a window ledge, tends to stay where the owners can see it.

Bouquet or arrangement? For a business, we'd almost always send an arrangement. A wrapped bouquet means someone has to stop and find a vase, and most new shops don't own one yet. A basket like Garden Gate Basket or a vase arrangement is ready the moment it's unwrapped.

Colour. Yellow, orange and red are the classic opening colours, and they photograph well in a storefront. Sunflowers are hard to beat for a café or a shop with a lot of daylight. If the owners already have a vase, Meadow Light, fifteen sunflowers in baby's breath, is a cheerful choice. For somewhere with a strong look of its own, pick up one colour from the sign or the window display and let the flowers sit next to it rather than fight it.

Not sure what the place looks like? Warm, mixed colours are a safe bet for almost any business.

When to send grand opening flowers

The morning of the opening is the traditional time, so the flowers are in place for the first customers and the first photos. Choose the morning delivery window at checkout. If the ribbon cutting is early, think about the day before instead.

Before you book the day before, check one thing: will anyone be there? A business that hasn't opened yet may have the doors locked while the owners are out picking up stock, with nobody there to take the flowers in. A quick message to the owner, or a look at their social media for opening hours, saves a missed delivery.

There's also a good case for sending a week or two after the opening. On the day, the counter may already be full of flowers from everyone else. A second arrival, once the excitement has worn off and the real work has started, is often noticed more.

For a last-minute gift, our shop designs can go out the same day when you order by 1 pm, for most postal codes across York Region and Toronto. You can also book a future date at checkout, which is handy when you hear about an opening weeks ahead.

Restaurant opening flowers: think about the dining room

Restaurants are the one kind of business where the wrong flowers can cause small problems. A few things to keep in mind if you're sending flowers to a new restaurant, or ordering them for your own.

  • Scent. Strongly scented flowers like oriental lilies compete with the food. We'd leave them out of anything going near a dining room.
  • Pollen and petals. Nobody wants either on a plate. Arrangements with tight-headed flowers, like roses, carnations and anthurium, are the safer choice.
  • Placement. The host stand or the bar is usually the right spot for a gift arrangement. The owners will have their own plans for the tables.
  • Heat. Kitchens throw a lot of warmth into a small room, and flowers fade faster near the pass or a pizza oven.

Something bold and tropical, like Island Flame, suits a restaurant well: red roses, anthurium and red ginger in a vase, with almost no scent and a long-lasting shape.

Many restaurants have a soft opening for friends and family before the public one. If you know both dates, ask the owners which one they'd like flowers for.

Grand opening customs in the GTA

Toronto and York Region bring together a lot of traditions around new businesses, and flowers play a part in several of them.

In many Chinese and Korean communities, tall flower arrangements at the door of a new business are a traditional way to wish it success, often in red, yellow or bright mixed colours, with a ribbon or card naming who sent them. You may have seen them lined up outside new shops and restaurants in Markham and Richmond Hill. If you're hoping for something tall for an entrance, call us at (437) 291-5605 and we'll talk through what we can make.

Two colour notes that are well worth knowing:

  • All-white arrangements are usually avoided for openings in many East Asian families, since white is closely tied to mourning. Add warm colours, even if the shop itself is white and minimal.
  • Red and gold or yellow are traditionally lucky colours in Chinese culture, which makes sunflowers and red roses a comfortable choice.

When you don't know the owners' background well, bright and mixed is the safe choice, and asking a friend of theirs is never a bad idea.

What to write on the card

Keep it short and about them. The card will be read on a busy day, and it may stay propped against the vase for weeks, where customers will read it too. Your message is tucked in with the flowers, and prices are never included with a delivery.

A few lines that work:

  • "Congratulations on opening day. We can't wait to be regulars."
  • "Wishing you a busy first day and many more after it."
  • "From your neighbours at [business name]. Welcome to the street."
  • "So proud of you. You did it."
  • "Congratulations to the whole team. Here's to a great first year."

If you're a supplier, a landlord or a business partner, sign with your company name and a person's name together, so the owners know who to thank.

For more ideas and designs, our congratulations flowers are made for exactly this kind of moment.

Office opening flowers

A new office, clinic or studio calls for something a little calmer than a shop opening. The flowers will sit on a reception desk where clients wait, often under bright overhead lights and close to a heating vent, so a vase arrangement with sturdy flowers like roses, alstroemeria and lisianthus makes more sense than a big wrapped bouquet.

If you're sending to a professional office, such as a law firm, an accounting practice or a dental clinic, think about the waiting room. A modest arrangement in soft or warm colours fits that kind of room better than something very tall or heavily scented.

If you're the one opening the office, flowers for the first week are a good start, and it's worth thinking about what happens after. A reception piece that changes every week or two keeps the space feeling cared for long after the opening. Our corporate and office flowers page explains how regular office deliveries work.

We deliver to offices across York Region and Toronto seven days a week. For a building with a security desk or a loading dock, add the suite number and any delivery instructions in the order notes.

Ideas

Flower ideas by type of business

A starting point, not a rule. If you know the owners' favourite colour, that wins.

  1. 1

    Café or bakery

Sunflowers and yellow roses look at home beside a coffee bar. Ask the owners to keep them away from the espresso machine's steam and the pastry case.

  2. 2

    Restaurant

Something bold for the host stand rather than the tables. Anthurium and red ginger hold up in a warm room and have very little scent.

  3. 3

    Salon or spa

Soft pinks, whites and greens suit a calm room. Roses and lisianthus fill a reception desk without crowding it.

  4. 4

    Boutique

Pick up a colour from the shop's branding or window display. A tall, narrow piece leaves room on the counter for the till and the bags.

  5. 5

    Office or clinic

Quieter colours in a vase that sits neatly on reception. Roses, alstroemeria and carnations last well under office lighting.

  6. 6

    Gym or studio

Bright and simple. Sunflowers and orange roses suit a room full of energy, and nobody minds a bit of height by the front desk.

Questions

What people ask about grand openings

What flowers are good for a grand opening?

Bright, sturdy flowers in a vase or basket, so the owners don't have to arrange anything. Sunflowers, roses, anthurium and alstroemeria all work well and last in a busy shop. Warm colours like yellow, orange and red are the classic choice, and in many East Asian communities all-white arrangements are avoided for openings.

Can you deliver grand opening flowers the same day?

Yes. For designs in our shop, order by 1 pm for same-day delivery to most postal codes across York Region and Toronto, seven days a week. Larger opening-day pieces are designed to order and quoted for your date, so get in touch as soon as you know when the doors open.

Should I send flowers before or on the opening day?

The morning of the opening is traditional, so choose the morning delivery window. The day before can work too, but only if someone will be there to receive them, since a business that isn't open yet may be locked. Sending a week or two later is also a kind choice.

What do you write on a card for a new business?

Keep it short and warm: "Congratulations on opening day, we can't wait to be regulars" or "Wishing you a busy first day and many more after it." If you're sending from a company, add a person's name too, so the owners know who to thank.

Will the owners see the price?

No. Prices are never included with a delivery. Your gift message is tucked in with the flowers, so the owners will know who they're from. If you're sending on behalf of a company, add a person's name to the message as well.

How much do opening-day arrangements cost?

Designs in our shop show their price online. Larger pieces for an entrance or a launch event are quoted individually, because sizes and flowers vary so much. Tell us what you have in mind and roughly what you'd like to spend, and we'll suggest what fits.

Do you deliver to businesses in Markham, Vaughan and Toronto?

Yes. We deliver across York Region and Toronto seven days a week, from Newmarket and Aurora down to downtown Toronto. Delivery starts at $12 and is priced by driving distance.

Tell us about your day

We quote every event on its own. Share what you know so far, even if it is just a date and a colour, and we will take it from there.
