Romantic Flower Arrangements for Anniversaries That Impress

/8 min read

Red roses with a tiara topper, black ruffled wrap and fairy lights

Good romantic flower arrangements for anniversaries come down to three choices: which flower, what colour and how big. Get those right and you don't need much else. Below: what the classic anniversary flowers mean, the arrangements that work best, ideas by milestone year, and what to sort out before you order.

If you'd rather skip ahead, our anniversary flowers are all in one place, and there are simpler hand-tied bouquets too. Every order is designed by hand in our studio in Oak Ridges, at the north end of Richmond Hill, from that day's flowers, and delivered across York Region and Toronto.

Why flowers still work as an anniversary gift

Flowers arrive during the day and then sit there for a week reminding someone that you remembered. Dinner is over in two hours. A vase of roses on the kitchen counter gets looked at every time someone walks past.

The flower and the colour do a lot of the talking, and the gift message does the rest. Keep the message short. Three honest lines beat a paragraph borrowed from a greeting card.

The meaning behind popular anniversary flowers

Most flower meanings come from Victorian tradition, so treat them as a guide rather than a rulebook. They're still handy when you're stuck.

Red roses: the symbol of deep love

The obvious pick, and obvious for a reason. Red roses traditionally stand for passion and commitment, and nobody has ever opened the door to a dozen of them and wondered what you meant. If your partner likes things low-key, a smaller bunch of deep red roses can feel more personal than a huge one.

Pink roses: admiration and gratitude

Pink is the softer message: affection, thanks, "I still really like you." Pale blush suits couples who find red a bit much. Hot pink is happier and louder.

White roses: pure and lasting love

White roses are often linked with loyalty and new beginnings, which is why they show up at weddings and milestone anniversaries. One caution: an all-white bunch can read as sympathy flowers to some people. Mix in greenery or a little blush and it stays clearly celebratory. We'd add eucalyptus.

Lilies: devotion

Oriental lilies bring height and a scent that fills a room once they open. Traditionally they stand for devotion. Two practical notes: pull off the orange pollen as each flower opens so it doesn't stain the tablecloth, and skip lilies completely if there's a cat in the house, because they're toxic to cats.

Orchids: rare and lasting beauty

Orchids are associated with refinement and strength, and a potted orchid can keep flowering for a couple of months. They aren't part of our range right now, so take this as general advice: an orchid plant suits someone who'd rather have something to keep than cut flowers.

Most romantic anniversary flower arrangements

Classic dozen red roses

Twelve red roses and some greenery. It's what most people picture, and it works for any year, from the first to the fiftieth. The one real decision is shape: a tight, round bouquet looks formal, while a looser one with more stem showing feels more relaxed.

Rose and lily arrangement

Roses bring the colour and lilies bring the scent and height. It's a big-looking combination, which is why people tend to choose it for milestone years. Lilies usually arrive partly closed and open over two or three days, so the arrangement often looks fuller on day three than on day one.

Mixed romantic bouquet

A mix gives you more texture than a single-flower bunch. Roses go in the middle, hydrangea adds fullness, and spray roses, alstroemeria and carnations fill the gaps. Alstroemeria and carnations are the quiet workhorses here: they often outlast everything else in the vase by several days.

Long-stem rose collection

Long stems change the look more than you'd expect. Same roses, more height, a lot more drama in a tall vase. They're a common choice for 10th, 25th and 50th anniversaries. Make sure there's a tall vase at the other end, or someone will be cutting those long stems down to fit.

Modern orchid arrangements

Clean lines, one colour, plenty of space. Again, orchids aren't something we make, but if your partner likes that minimal look, a few anthurium stems or a tight bunch of single-colour tulips give a similar modern feel, and both are in our range.

Choosing anniversary flowers based on milestones

There is a traditional flower for each anniversary year, which we cover in our guide to anniversary flowers by year. Here's a looser take.

First anniversary

Keep it light. A mixed seasonal bouquet, pink roses, or tulips in spring. Tulips keep growing in the vase and bend toward the light, which some people love and some find a bit chaotic.

Fifth anniversary

White roses, hydrangeas, or a mixed arrangement in soft colours. Five years in, you know their taste. Use that.

Tenth anniversary

A decade deserves something a size up: more red roses than usual, or roses with lilies.

Twenty-fifth anniversary

Silver anniversaries lean toward white and cream. White roses, white oriental lilies, lisianthus and some eucalyptus for that silvery green. If you're set on a plant, a white orchid is a traditional choice.

Fiftieth anniversary

Gold is the theme, so yellow and cream roses work well, or sunflowers if the couple is more cheerful than formal. Fiftieth anniversary flowers often end up at a family party, so think about where they'll sit. On a dinner table, go low enough that people can see each other over it.

Making anniversary flowers personal

The small details are what make it feel like it came from you. Their favourite flower. The colour of your wedding flowers. A line in the gift message that only the two of you will get. The message is tucked in with the flowers, and prices are never included with a delivery, so you don't need to worry about the receipt landing on the table.

If there's a particular flower that matters to you both, call the studio at (437) 291-5605 before you order and ask what's possible with that day's flowers.

Anniversary flower trends in Toronto and GTA

Garden-inspired designs

Looser shapes, stems at different heights, softer colours. Think peonies in early summer and ranunculus in spring.

Monochromatic bouquets

One colour, several kinds of flower. All white, all blush or all deep red. It looks considered without trying too hard.

Rose boxes

Roses packed tightly into a box. They photograph well. Our own preference is a vase, because flowers sitting in water last longer and the vase is still useful next month.

Floral and gift combinations

Plenty of people pair flowers with chocolates or a bottle of wine. Our advice: let the flowers arrive on their own during the day and save the rest for dinner.

Why local florists create better anniversary experiences

Fresher flowers

A local order doesn't spend days in a shipping box. Ours are designed from that day's flowers.

Personal service

You can call and talk to the people making your flowers, seven days a week. The studio is open Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, Saturday 9:30 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Designs that aren't generic

Because each order is made by hand from what came in that day, no two look exactly alike. If a stem isn't up to standard, we swap it for one of equal or higher value in the same colours.

Reliable delivery

We deliver across York Region and Toronto every day of the week.

How to choose an anniversary bouquet

Your partner's favourite flowers

If you know them, use them. If not, look at what's in their garden.

Favourite colours

Think about the room the flowers will live in. Someone with an all-white living room usually loves white and green.

The milestone

Bigger years can take a bigger arrangement. A first anniversary can be a simple bunch.

Presentation style

A hand-tied bouquet looks romantic when it's handed over, but it needs a vase at the other end. A vase arrangement arrives ready to put down, which is kinder if they're at work.

Ordering anniversary flowers from Laris Florist

Pick an arrangement, add your gift message and choose a delivery window. If they have pets, mention it in the order notes and the studio will design around it. If anything arrives damaged, contact us within 24 hours for a replacement or refund.
