Delphinium Flowers: Tall Blue Spikes You Can Buy in Toronto
/2 min read

Delphinium flowers for height and true blue
Delphinium flowers grow as tall spikes packed with small blossoms, in sky blue, deep violet, purple and white. True blue is rare in flowers, which is a big part of their appeal. They're sometimes called larkspur, though that name usually means their annual cousin. Garden delphiniums bloom around June and July here, and if you want to buy flowers in Toronto with a cottage-garden feel, a few stems do a lot of the work.
This video covers growing them at home:
Care tips to make delphinium last
In the garden, delphiniums like well-drained soil, full sun and cool summers, so a humid Toronto July can be hard on them. Stake the spikes before a storm flattens them, and cut spent spikes back for a second, smaller round of blooms.
As cut flowers, they drink a lot through hollow stems, so keep the vase full. Keep them away from the fruit bowl: ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which makes delphinium drop its florets. With fresh water, expect about a week. All parts of the plant are toxic, so keep them away from pets and small children.

Buying delphinium locally in Toronto
Delphinium isn't part of our current range at Laris Florist. In summer, look for it at flower markets, farmers' markets and florists who stock seasonal stems. Choose spikes with the bottom flowers open and the top still in bud.
If you're after that tall, blue-and-purple look in a bouquet, snapdragons and purple lisianthus give a similar height and colour, and both are in our range. We design every order by hand in our Oak Ridges studio and deliver across Toronto and York Region seven days a week.
